I am an Associate Professor of Community and Regional Planning at the University of British Columbia. I previously worked at the United Nations and spent a decade as a faculty member at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University. My research focuses on urban planning, politics and policy, with particular interest in four themes related to urban spatial transformation: displacement, disasters, densification and public participation. Across these topics I have a strong, cross-cutting interest in organizations. I have broad geographical interests, having worked and conducted research in many different places, ranging from Taiwan to Tanzania, and am passionate about comparative, empirical research in the rapidly changing cities of the Global South and North. Past research projects have addressed, among other topics, forced displacement in East Africa, post-disaster reconstruction in Haiti, urban densification in Mongolia and the climate-related risks faced by unsheltered residents of North American cities. I received the Urban Planning and Design teaching award from students at Harvard on three occasions. Professionally, I am a certified planner in Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States.
